Quilt Labels

This is my most recent example of a quilt label.  I hand embroider all my labels.  This one in particular was attached to the quilt I made for my mother-in-law who recently passed away.  Laura was my mother-in-law, Louise is her older sister and best friend.  When Laura passed away, we asked Louise if she would like to take the quilt.  She was very happy to take it. It reminded her of her dear sister, and she loves homemade things.

I'm not a wonderful artist, so most of my quilt label designs are "borrowed" from Pinterest or other websites.  I have a light board with which I put the drawing on, then the fabric over the drawing. Then I hand embroider the design.

Quilt labels are important. They usually document the quilt name or pattern used, who made it, when it was completed, and sometimes to whom it was given to.

I'm pretty proud of how my quilt labels turn out.  My embroidery is much better than my quilting (but I enjoy quilting more).  On another post I will display some of my prize winning embroidery pieces.

Lady the Cat was my BFF

This past Sunday my sweet cat Lady passed away. We think she was 16 or 17 years old. Maybe older.

My daughter named her Lady after she watched the movie Lady and the Tramp.  I could not convince her that Lady was a dog's name, but sometimes there's no convincing a 5-year old of something that makes sense to them.  I rarely called her Lady.  Sometimes I called her Stinky Pete, Stinky Petersburg, Shue Shue, My Love, Lover Lover,  but she always called me Momma (or at least I imagined she did).  She never really liked Stinky Pete. She told me not to call her that because that was a dog name (I used to call Whiskers the Dog "Stinky Pete" sometimes. Yes, Whiskers. That's what happens when a 4 year old names the family pet).

In this picture she was "helping" me sort through some fabric scraps. She often "helped" me with folding the laundry too. She enjoyed "helping" me when I would lay out a new quilt top on the floor, she would sit right in the middle of it. I guess she wanted me to see what it would look like on the bed, since she was always asleep on my bed!

She was quite the character, especially when she was very young. After my daughter would leave for school, she would go into her bedroom and pull off the bed covers, pull off the pillow (sometimes drag it down the hallway), pull out all her dirty clothes in the hamper and drag them out, and she would go through my daughter's drawers and pull out her jewelry. I told Eleanor that Lady acted exactly like a little sister, going though drawers, making a mess in her big sister's room, stealing her stuff.

She was a cat that could only love two people at one time.  When we first brought her home, she loved my daughter and me, and when Eleanor moved out, she learned to love John, but I was the constant in her life.

She died peacefully, in her favorite place, on my bed in the sunshine. The night before she finished all her food, after she ate she hopped up on the bed and slept between us, as always.  When I woke up, she was asleep in the crook of my folded arm. She acted normal in the morning, begged me to pick her up and hold her like a baby while I sat at the computer and she purred, which was our daily routine.  Then it was time for John and I to leave for the morning.  When we came back a few hours later, she was gone.

We found a box to fit her, while John was digging the hole, I wrapped her in the blanket I made for her, and set her in the box.  I didn't close the lid of the box.  I left it on the bed, and when John brought the box out and set it in the hole, he had tears rolling down his cheeks.

Lady the the Cat was my BFF, Best Furry Friend.

We think we are done with pets. It's just too hard to say goodbye.

Moda Sampler Shuffle Blocks Complete

Well, these are the remaining blocks for the Moda Sampler Shuffle.  I have to be honest, the last one was appliqué AGAIN, so I just decided to replace it with a pieced block, which is the one with multi-colored rows and black bars.  With more math than I cared to do, it turned out pretty good.

I liked this challenge.  Actually, the challenge isn't complete until a quilt top has been put together, sent to Quilting Nancy, bound and labeled.

Moda Sampler Shuffle Week 6

Week 6 of the Moda Sampler Shuffle included a block that required appliqué.  As much as I enjoy looking at and admiring appliqué, I do not enjoy doing it, so I resort to the lazy form of appliqué called "raw edge".  Appliqué usually involves tedious hand work of folding down edges of fabric, stitching it to the base fabric. Instead I use a Fusable product that is ironed between the 2 pieces of fabric, then I tightly zig zag with my machine, the edges.  It doesn't look as pretty as traditional appliqué, but that's me, a little bit lazy!
I'm not afraid of handwork.  People who enjoy doing appliqué always tell me, "Don't be afraid of the hand work," and I'm not.  I've been doing embroidery for decades, winning about 15 blue ribbons at the Los Angeles County Fair, San Bernardino County Fair, and the Alameda County Fair over the past 25 years.  My stitches of embroidery are tiny and precise, and over the years I've improved how the back of my project looks, almost as good as the front of the project. So handwork is not something I'm afraid of.  I just don't enjoy appliqué, and avoid it when ever I can.
Thankfully the other two blocks this week were very easy and traditionally pieced blocks.  I'm eager to finish the 30 blocks and get this quilt going!!!!!!!

Week 4 of the Moda Sampler Shuffle

For some reason a very nice quilting blog website posted the blocks for week #4 very early.  Usually this nice website posts the new blocks on Friday, but for some reason they posted on Wednesday. It worked out perfectly for me because now I had something to do on a holiday when there are few stores and restaurants open.
This week's blocks were easier.  But I think that my fabric choices for the railroad prints were too busy to combine. Oh well, it's staying that way!
I did enjoy the bright colors I had on hand for these blocks.  I've always enjoyed working with bright colors. Something about them is positive and happy!  Right now I need that.
Now back to work making more "flying geese" for the border.  There are 132 total flying geese for the border, according to the completed quilt instructions.  I have about 50 finished.  There's a very easy "no waste" method for flying geese, and this method allows you to make 4 at a time!  Once you get the hang of it the process goes very quickly.
So if anyone is counting, there are 15 out of 30 completed blocks so far. Half way there!!  This "challenge" goes through the first part of January in which all 30 sampler blocks should be completed.  Then the challenge will be putting the quilt top together!

Moda Sampler Shuffle Week 3 and 4

This is week 3 and 4of the Moda Sampler Shuffle.  I wanted to have a little bit of fun with color and polka dots with this week.  It's a good thing I have lots of both!!

Each square is 6 1/2", and over the 10 week period there will be a total of 30 blocks released.  I'm excited to see what it will look like when it's put together.

Sampler Shuffle

The Moda Sampler Shuffle. What is it? Moda is a brand of fabric very popular among quilters. It is a challenge offered by my local quilt store here in Livermore, In Between Stitches.  On their blog is posted 2 or 3 new squares each week with instructions to finish.  It's a 10 week challenge, and at the end of the 10 weeks you have enough sampler squares to complete a quilt top.
These 3 squares are the assignment for week 1.  I also finished week 2, using some of the fabric my sister Frances bought for me in a grab bag.  Thanks Frances!!
Each square is 6 1/2", and yes, I'm making it scrappy, but in brights, not pastels.  I'm going to try to include black and white in each square. Some squares require 3 colors, in that case I will add color.
This is really fun, helps me learn new techniques.
I'll keep posting as I finish more squares......that is if I can keep up!
